I got my PP stamped on Nov. 7, still waiting for the plastic card. I want to get my SS card change from Valid for work with INS authorization to whatever it should be.

Shall I phsically go to the local SS office or can I mail it to them? If I have to go there, which documents shall I bring with me besides the old card and passport? Shall I wait until the plastic card comes?

Well, you have to visit SSN office

You have to visit SSN office.
You need to carry following
1).Passport ( with stamping)
2).SSN card with "valid only with INS authorization"

You need to fill a form, which you can find in SSN office. The whole process took 30 minutes for me. New SSN card was mailed to my home address in 2 weeks. I received plastic card just yesterday.

Ps:-Take photo copy of your old SSN.

You can go now but there is no hurry since your SSN will be the same.
Passport and old SSN card are required. S-5 I think is the form, which you can also fill at the last minute at SS office (it is easy) or download from the web.
Some rare cases it took some time for A# to be entered into the system and new immigrants were turned down.
