Change of address between FP and final approval!

I just wanted your opinion on what happens if someone changes address between FP and RFE (or final approval if RFE is not issued) even though you inform INS promptly of your change of address. I have seen people saying that INS is poor in making the change of address in their systems so its not a good idea to do so.

Any ideas?

Don't do it

I know from my friends experience, never change address in your final months of approval. It will mess up everything. They might not update your address and in case of my friend they updated to the wrong address.
wrong street # and it was a disaster. So don't do it.

Do not do that if you have a choice. They tend to mess up your new address.

address chage delima

Changing address is a very bad idea, I changed mine after 3 1/2 yrs, and they did not update my address, and if you call 800, they won't tell you, I received my FP at old address, thank God I lived with friends, and they forward it to me, so than I call the 800 to change the address, and than after few months, I personally went to INS to check, if they update. but they change by than, and now I have to move again on 1st Nov, I don't know what to do. Expecting my card to come. My RD is Dec 99. Any advice? if they will process Dec 99, before Nov 2004.

If u do change u address..notify BCIS and also fill the change of address form at the postoffice. Since I do software dev. work for the post office and I know about this, IF the bcis sends a mail to your old address, the sort program reads the bar code on the mail and compares that to the any change of addresses in the database.

If there is a hit(last name, first name) on the read mail to the first name, last name in the database, it prints out the new yellow label and labels your new address...

IF there are more than 1 person with first name, last name. Its sits on the conveyor belt going round and round until a HUMAN postal inspector picks up and actually figures out who it goes to...

Once you change your address at the post office, It also notifies every sender of your mail of your address change...!

The program is called SPS(sort program system) and I am honored to do work on it :)

Good job wantmygcnow! Now because of your work, mail will less susceptable to be lost.

By the way, is this program deployed nationally?

Yes its deployed nationally, all the states... and you can even change your address online at www.usps.gov.
It takes 24 hours to take effect. I would do it online because its quick and fast and you never know the document you fill at the post office may get lost(Ok that was a joke!)...don't tell my boss :)

It's the law!! you must notify within 10 days in your new address.

He is saying that you should not move during the final stages of your process, not to hide your new address.

hmmm,,,

All those mails I recieved from the INS/Bcis/Uscis are stamped something like "return service required, do not forward". Does this mean notifying USPS of Changing your address alone would not work? Any experts on this, please?

I moved(had to) after filing 485. My address was updated through my filing EAD application. To be 100% sure that USCis has their correct current address, One can apply one of their benifits such like EAD or RTD. With their reciept, you'd know that your address is updated. I know it sounds silly, and costs 100+ bucks but gives you better sleep at night.

have a nice weekend ya'all

wish everyone good luck

here is my experience with changing address:
i moved from one state to another on june 99, i was suppose to send my I-485 on August 99, with the delays of medicals and all that, i managed to get it out by october 99. i did not notify INS with address change, however my I-485 application had new address. i did file out mail forwarding with USPS and guess what, i never received my notice of action. so iguess USPS will send it back to INS not forward it to new address in case someone move out.

It's faster.

Thanks to the new system via the 800#. My change of address took only a few days to happen. So was my wife's.

Here is what I did:

-I called the 800# and made the change over the phone. They told me that it will take effect immediately, but they also asked me to fill out the change of address form (forgot its number), and to mail it to the NE office ASAP. And I did. A week later, NE sent me a confirmation! It was that simple!
