All,

I have my interview on the 21st of October. My question is, after clearing my interview,

1) Do I need the certification of naturalization when i apply for the US passport?
2) Do I need if when i go to take my oath?
3) If I do need the certificate, when should I apply for it given that my interview is on the 21st of this month?

I read that its form N-600 but when i read who should file it, it did not mention people who have a GC (5 year). I am just looking for some assistance in terms of what form and when i should apply for it so I can get ready for it now and apply for my passport asap after my oath.

Thanks in advance

Certificate is given to you AFTER oath, not after interview. You don't become a US citizen until you take your oath.

Some USCIS office locations provide same day oath after successful interview but many USCIS offices schedule oath ceremony on a different day, a few weeks after interview.

Yes, the original certificate has to be submitted with passport application.

There is no separate application for the certificate, your N-400 includes issuance of the certificate of naturalization.

Exactly. And make sure to make a copy of the certificate before they send it with the passport application. It's really stupid that they send it out.

To chime in - The Certificate of Naturalization is different from the Certificate of Citizenship (N-600). How are they different - Go google it.

Sending in the original evidence of citizenship with your passport application does make a lot of sense. Unless mechanisms are in place to verify it directly from the issuing authority(USCIS, birth registration etc.), this is the right way to do. Remember the passport is a proof of nationality, so a photocopy or such for verification is open to rampant fraud.

I think a record of the Certificate (Certificates of naturalization have numbers) should be verifiable with passport request information and the information on certificate database. Picture is on the certificate, and pictures are sent along the passport request.

Expected this statement: Non Dept. of State. passport acceptance agents do not go through stricter security clearance. There have been cases where they have been involved in fraud.

The assumption is that in a controlled environment DOS passport specialists have access to other records for verification and are the process is more reliable with multi-level quality checks to reduce fraud.

I read that its form N-600 but when i read who should file it, it did not mention people who have a GC (5 year).

N-600 is only for people who obtained citizenship through their parents, when they were under 18. If you're becoming a US citizen as an adult by filing N-400 you'll receive a naturalization certificate at the oath ceremony, without having to pay or apply separately for it.

If you obtain citizenship via N-400, for your first US passport you will need to submit the naturalization certificate. For the next passport you can either send the old passport or the certificate.

Thanks Jacko, and the rest of the guys for your thoughtful responses. I have my interview on the 21st of Oct. Just a bit nervous.
