Certificate of Naturalization

Hi all,

Could anyone kindly share any experience of misplacing their Certificate of Naturalization? What is the procedure to apply for replacement? How long does it take to get one, and what documents are needed?

Also, once someone has a US Passport, and then misplaces their Certificate, is it possibly to renew their passport without the certificate?

Thanks for sharing!

i think you would not need to have the cert to renew the US passport. however, i might be wrong.

from what i have read, it would take 9months to 1 yr to replace the cert with complicate procedures (details? i do not have any)

An old expired US Passport is enough to get a new one.

I was told at my oath ceremony that it takes 18 months to get a new Certificate of Naturalization. The current fee is $220.

You can renew your passport by mail by sending in your old passport, two photos and the fee. They'll mail you both the new passport and your old one.

Thanks for the update. I did check the USCIS website, and the fee is $220. I cannot imagine why it would take them 18 months to process it, since i know they print those out on a daily basis for people having the same day oath!

Because you're dealing with INS. Did you forget that? :D

Once you have a US passport, you do not need the naturalization certificate to renew your passport.

Because issuing Certificates of Naturalization at oath ceremonies is a high priority - it's the only proof citizen applicants have of their US citizenship and is the whole point of the process.

Issuing replacements is a much lower priority - presumably because they figure (a) you shouldn't have lost it in the first place and (b) there's a good chance many of these people already have US passports.

By the way, the Supreme Court has ruled that an unexpired US passport is the only real proof of US citizenship.
