Canada Wants you!

Immigrants finding jobs in Canada, just not the ones they want

A new study of working-age immigrants to Canada shows most find work quickly, but seldom in their desired field.

The survey, which followed men and women between ages 25 and 44, found that only one-third of newcomers found a job in their intended occupation during their first year in Canada. A further nine per cent found those jobs in their second year in the country.

Canada is a good option

one of my friend, an average programmer, could not find any programming job in the last 3 years(he found semi programming job, very low pay), but he will become citizen in another year and work in usa in a snap.

another guy is an expert programmer, very good resume, is managing to get something or the other, which is the most promising thing.

Thanks, but let's focus to contact US senators and hopefully get out of this retrogression soon.

I lived in three countries, I have been working full-time since I was 13 in order to bring food to the table. I have some experience in life, I can tell you this:

In many aspects, Canada is a poor country. It manages to be labeled as a rich country, but that conceals lots of poverty there. I also learned in life that "rankings" of the best cities by The Economist, etc are irrelevant. It is up to each individual what the definition of "best city to live" is. If employment opportunities are taking into account - one of the important criterias to most of us in this forum - Vancouver, BC should not even appear in the ranking.

Good luck to whoever wants to go to Canada.

Imagine all this log jam while other developed countries are wising up and embracing immigrants.
I believe in the end America did not get to pole position with protectionist anti immigrant policies, so it should all blow over in a few months.

Bear in mind.....that livable country....definition....is a country with less stress.......I am sure it is not US as per the recent report.

Toronto life is far better that USs........

Here...though you earn more.....think of taxes, property tax....CHILDRENS EDUCATION.....unthinkable......

PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME LIFE AS PLEASANT AS YOU THINK HERE

IT USED TO BE....NOT ANYMORE.....

YOUR THOUGHTS WILL EVAPORATE ONCE YOU GET KIDS AND GC

All this has been said by a friend who is a Citizen...

IT LOOKS TRUE

I will like to be in a place where there is sufficient jobs, and pay is decent compared to cost of living.

no country can beat USA in this department.

having a kid is expensive, but if you plan it, it wont pinch you so bad...thats my take.

but if i have to choose between india, australia and canada, it will have to be canada....just because it is closest to usa.

17 years and counting .. no GC
3 USA citizen kids.
Happily living in the USA...

It is how you live your life matters... good budgeting, strong faith, good friends (no catdog, alhindi), kitchen full of SWAD items, thodi is hindi and thodi si gaali galoch.. and you are set. America is the best. JEEVO MERE LAAL!

"Toronto life is far better that USs........"
It depends on what your definition of "better" is. I lived in Vancouver, I spent time in Toronto as well. Funny that you go to Vancouver, some people saying they are coming from Toronto because job opportunities are not very good there. Then you go to Toronto, many are saying they are coming from Vancouver, because jobs are scarce there. That's Canada, a nest of socialists who tax the young and entrepeneur to sustain many lazy in the welfare. You can say whatever you want, but for most young people like us, you are simply not happy if don't have enough career opportunities.

Now regarding if you have family, kids, etc again it depends. I live in the US and I work for the State. I have lots and lots of benefits to my family, 100% medical insurance paid by my employer, excellent retirement plan, etc. In my specific case, Seattle, WA is the best city for me to live.

Now if you think that I think career is everything in my life, no. I think the US is where I find the best balance between career opportunities, security, wildlife activities, etc.

GOD BLESS AMERICA !

marlon2006...you got it man..

i have been to australia, i have families in norway(i think the best welfare country in the world, its so good, its second in my list :), friends in UK, friends in Canada.

USA is the best, the most balanced and fun life you can have...

let me comment about norway...
you can get unemployment benefits for two years, 75% of your salary...
Maternity leave is around 10 months., sick leave if doctor prescribes can be upto 6 months, with full pay (i dont like this ones though, imagine a company paying for non-working employees)
they make ton of money from petroleum, they are saving a nest egg for whole of norway in case they run out of petroleum one day.

but its supposed to be a dark, cold and depressing place....with unemployment very high.., i think immigration is not encouraged.

The point AlHindi/Catdog missed

Correct.

There is one more thing that Alhind/Catdog and other pessimistics like him are missing about how this capitalist country works:

Yes, we may fail and the circumstance, aka high supply of IT workers can make some of us give up or get frustrated waiting in this sad greencard queue for 10 years. However, you notice that we call US Senators and House Reps and they at minimum listen to our concern. They always have replied to all of my personal requests before, unrelated to this immigration request. Sure, the US government or employers may not be in a hurry to help us get the greencard. However, many of them are willing to listen. From there, if you have the persuasion power, you may succeed. This is the beauty of this country and unique to America and America only. Go to my country in South America, as an average citizen, and attempt to talk to the senators there. They will ignore 100 of your inquires. Probably after the 101st one they will send you literally to hell.

God Bless this land. It is what it is

It all depends

Which country is best an individual depends on several factors: jobs, future prospects, family, etc.
Overall, I agree that there are more oppourtunities here.
Canada is certainly rapidly improving. The Canadian dollar has gained about 60% against the US dollar in the last 4 years. Their economy is booming.
The richest province is Alberta with all the oil.
However, the weather is cold.

Europe is also turning out to be a good place to work: Ireland, UK, etc.
UK and ireland are opening doors to skilled folks: IT, engineers, Doctors, researchers, nurses, professors, etc.

No kidding, do you know when I heard the same story "Canada is improving" ?
1996, when I first arrived there. It is still the same. Canada goes a step forward, and three steps back.

It all depends on what you want out of life. If are looking for economic oppourtunities, the US can't be beat. If your job isn't that important to you, go to Canada.

Canada is not booming. Alberta is booming big time. The unemployment rate in Canada is on average 50% more than the US. The taxes are on average, 50% more. The Canadian dollar has improved a great deal, but only in the last 6 months. It didn't improve because Canada is doing better, it improved because the US is doing worse (but still better than Canada).

Europe is also turning out to be a good place to work: Ireland, UK, etc.

Ireland has undergone an amazing transformation the last 15 years or so. Lots of job and tech jobs at that.

canada is really encouraging immigration.
UK: I have a problem with their earning potential criterion. they require >US$70k as salary made in the last 12 months in addition to 4-5 years of exp. this is difficult especially if one does not live in california where salaries can be at that level; however so is the cost of living. looks to me like UK wants only IT folks working in california.

Actually if you read the fine text carefully UK will only give you a permit initially to go there and look for a job in your field. They will then give you PR after 1 year only if you find and maintain a "suitable" job in your field.

Canada must encourage immigration, because a number of newcomers don't take too long to go the US or go back home, if they can't make it to the US. I saw news on the TV recently saying that in certain regions in Canada, the official rate of immigrants abandoning Canada is 40%+. As my friend used to tell me, Canada sucks.

I think the purpose of a forum is to share experiences. I am not preaching about the US or or going against Canada, I am just saying what is true based on my own experience so others will know. Take care.

good experiences in a particular country it doesn't make sense to preach about it to every one or spewing bad things about a country if you have bad experience there.
