can travel back on expire indian passport

one of my friend came to us in 2003 on b1-b2 visa .he overstayed tll today .now due to some problems back home he needs to move back to india.his passport expired in 2005 .can he travel on expire passport back o his country.when he applied for emergency travel document with indian consulate they said they can not find any recrd from india for this passport.it will take them upto month to verify .now can he travel back on his expire passprot back to india.will airline will let him fly .i know he might face some problems in india but its very urgent for him to leave asap.please if some can advice on this one .thanks lot

he would probably be let back into India as they aint gonna deport him to anywhere.But hey, his gonna get a 10yr ban from the states. I know y'all already know that.
