Can the spouse work with EAD without SSN? and show SSN once he/she has received it.

This is pretty much a moot point. Getting an SSN is a very fast process. Anyway, in my case I started working (not on EAD but on TN), and got my SSN as soon as possible. Only problem is, no SSN no paycheck, so it is better for your spouse to get SSN as fast as possible.

Anyway, you don\'t need to wait for the SSN card to get in the mail, you can call them 2 or 3 days after you applied and they can give you the number by phone.

By the way, why are you multiposting this question, it makes your question look frivolous. Is your question serious, or are you just pulling our leg?

Good Luck!

Nope- SSN is a must.. or..

You HAVE to have either a Social Security Number, or if you can\'t get that, a Tax Payer\'s ID number to be able to get paid. No company will pay a worker without either of these. Mess all you want with whatever pleases your fancy.. even the INS, but NEVER EVER mess with the IRS! Even the president doesn\'t dare! A SSN or a Tax payer\'s ID are a MUST according to the IRS- everybody\'s gotta pay the taxes. There are only two things definite in life- "Taxes" and "Death"!

Maybe your spouse can make a deal with the company to get a "sign-on bonus" once he/she gets a SSN. Till then, maybe he/she does some research/internship "work" for free. (Companies won\'t allow him/her to work without getting paid either- its illegal according to the federal laws. It violets the minimum wages laws.)

My Situation

Hi,
I applied for 485/EAD/AP. Will be getting EAD soon.
My wife (on H4) has a SSNumber but stamped across it as \'NOT VALID FOR WORK\'.
so, my question is: Once I get EAD if she want to work , does she need to apply for a NEW SSN?. or can she use the existing one?.

Please reply
Thanks

for a new ss card i think . The new ss card will have just the name
and ssn .

I believe she\'s alright...

The reason for "NOT VALID FOR WORK" stamped on a Social Security Card is so that people can\'t just go with that card and get a job (Used to be that one could get a job as long as he/she had a social security card without any kind of "NOT VALID FOR WORK" stamp!). To verify eligibility, she\'d have to file a W9 form which asks for a proof that she\'s eligible to work in the USA. At that time, she can present her Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and have no problems.

No compay will provide payslip without SSN. If one works L1, H1, EAD , he/she has to pay SS TAX.

This thread changed topic slightly

I heard people can go to get new card when they get Green Card, to remove whatever restrictions printed in the card. I think you keep the same SSN number. However I think the other posted message that talks about the W-9 is probably right. The most important thing is to have authorization to work and an SSN, I doubt that whatever is printed in the card matters when you have authorization to work. Anyway, just go to the SS office, they\'ll help you out, or give them a call, it is not as bad as calling an IIO.

My 2 cents.
