All,
How many days I can stay in the US if I got laid off after 180 days of filing I-485?
I should get my EAD very soon, but right now it takes a long time to find a new job. So is there a time limit to find a new job?
Filed my I-485 in Feb 15 2002.

Thanks a lot for your help.

In status until Apporval

You can stay in the US after filing 485 as long as 485 is not approved. There is no time limit. You are called an 'adjustee' - waiting for the approval (or denial) for your application of adjustment of status (485).

The important thing is not 180 days, but the job on hand at the time of approval. Counting 180 days is helpful only if you are plannig to change your employer other than the one who sponsored your GC. If at the time of approval, you do not have a job (in case ther is an RFE or interview), your 485 wil be denied.

So, forget about how long you can stay, but start finding a steady job (in the same category as your GC application) as soon as you get the EAD so that when 485 is approved, you will be fine.

All the best,
