Can spouse start working after applying for EAD?

Hi,

I have a friend who would be applying for EAD. He carries a H1 and his spouse is on H4.

Can her spouse start working immediately after applying for the EAD?

I understand this is true for H1 holders, that they can start working under EAD once he/she applies for it.

His spouse currently seeking H1, have been denied once, but in the appeal process. She volunteers for the company now.

Thank you. I'll advise them that she'll have to wait for the approval of the EAD. Could you please advise on how long it typically takes to get an approval?

Even if not paid for it, it most likely is illegal. All work where somebody usually gets paid is considered work by CIS and requires work authorization.
