Hi guys,

My cousin's asylum is still pending with the asylum office since almost six months , he got his EAD with a restricted ssn.
The question is , can he attend a community college while waiting for the decision? He wants to study online IT class for two years, but I don't know if it is possible for someone with a pending asylum case to attend such a college.
Maybe I should go to one of those community college in order to inquire information about this case.

Thanks guys for any reply.

it is a double whammy

He will not get federal financial aid (grants and loans) and (for most states in the Union) he will not qualify for in-state tuition. This means that it will cost a lot to attend.

Where is he located?

That's not true. I am living in Florida and I started going to College before I was granted asylum. I paid in-state tuition. To be qualified for in-tuition state, you need to be a resident of this state. You only need to have a driver license history for more than one year in the state and some utility bills to prove your residency.

The tuition question is a state by state issue. Each state has its own rules but Florida is among the more generus ones. Also you need one year of residence to qualify.

But you had to show a work permit at least to get in-state fees, right?

I've been paying as an out-state for 1 year having a I-130 approved. They said minimun to have a work permit, or the NOA for the I-485 wich I have with me for the next term. I am in FL

No. I will double check this for you when I get home tonight but as far as I remember under Florida law you qualify as long as you have an asylum case pending.

going to state college has almost nothing to do as long as u r resident of the state and has state id cards.

if you want to seek finan cial aids , then you can't get that.
just don't feel like a foreinger, they dont have touch standards for enrollments.

I confirmed this. As long as the asylum case is pending you are eligible in Florida.
