Can main applicant do CP while spouse (derivative) does AOS?

I am still debating whether I should do AOS or CP. My CN will probably become current in December and CP seems to be faster and more straighforward. Unfortunately, my husband (derivative) would not be able to leave his job for a long period of time (it seems to take about 3 weeks to complete medicals and interview when choosing CP) so CP would not work for him unless we can do medicals in the States but that doesn't seem to be an option for CP.
So I was wondering if I could do CP and my husband AOS...
I've read about a few cases where the main applicant (lottery winner) chooses AOS and their dependents go through CP (follow-to-join CP) but is the reverse also an option?

Yes, that is possible. First, the principal gets an immigrant visa at the consulate.
Then, he enters US and gets GC at the border.
Then, the derivative in the US files I-485

The process takes time and might not be able to finish it by the end of fiscal year. Think twice whether you really want to risk that much.

Thank you both!
Raevsky, you're right, it seems a little risky and I may not want to gamble that much... But at least, I now know it is an option.
Tazmania, if I were to do CP it would be in Paris. I was under the impression the medicals could take up to 3 weeks but I may be wrong. Please share your experience on that point. Was it just a one-day deal for you? No need to go back to the doctor's office for vaccinations or further tests?

Thanks!

1. Make sure that you have all needed vaccination. You should start soon with missing ones.

2. Check how medical is working in France. In Germany a lot of ppl make first the interviews and go at the same day to the medical. We did a about a week before.

3. Please check my timeline.

Personally I think having 2 seperate processes for same case is risky, but possible. When dealing with USCIS I try as much as possibly to make things simpler. Remember, you are not the ONLY case they get (even they give you receipts, etc.). Keep it simple and straight forward so the officer can make decision faster. It's win - win situation.

I don't know how important your partner's job is that he could not be away for taking care of his green card. If i were you, I would try to make my GC the highest priority at this point. Getting GC is the ultimate achievement for every immigrant who intends to stay & work in US.

I totally agree with you ptux, getting the GC's is our highest priority and we'll do everything we can to increase our chances and keep the process simple. I am just investigating the different options we may have before we make a firm decision.
Thank you all for your valuable input. It's been very helpful so far!

If it's difficult for your hubby to get the time off to do CP, maybe it might be better for you to stick around and do AOS together. Sure AOS takes a little while longer but if you don't have other complicating factors the time will fly by real fast.
Like ptux said separte processing is unneccesarily complicated and too risky for sake of gaining a few months.
