I think you can work If you know A# or Alien Number on your EAD. Check with National customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.

SW28,

Hope you already got.

Was it not an option to go to your local office and
get it ?

can I get an interim EAD in this situation?

I was getting ready to go to San Jose office and get an interim EAD the very next day but the case got approved before that.
Will they give me an interim EAD even though the case has been approved?? Has anyone tried it?
I have the offfer letter with me. Pleasy reply ASAP

No, you do not need a EAD card

I was in the same situation as yours. my EAD card didnot arrive
in mail. I called the customer service and have them faxed a letter
letting my company know that my EAD was approved.

i started working with this letter, not the real EAD card.
no problems. The card arrived after few weeks.

Hopefully you'll be getting your card this week. I don't think any company would let you start before actually having seen the physical card. Talk to that company and show them the confirmation, I hope they'll understand your situation and may suggest you to start next week.

Good Luck

axm8606 is right

You do not need a physical card as long as your employer is
happy with approval notice/a letter from INS.

axm8606 is wrong

There is the list of employment eligibility documents and employer happiness is not in this list.

make your decision

Hello All,

Iam not arguing that you donot/ need an EAD card to work .

Iam just saying that i was able to work with out an EAD(card)
by using FAX letter (of approval) from INS.

I think it doesnot hurt if you try.. if it doesnot work then you can
go for I-ead or something else..

Have you finally received EAD card?

bottomline is employer needs to verify that you are authorized
to work. what happens in a case you loose ead in mail.
when you make a new application...you ask them to replace
to card...they do not issue a new card...but during the whole
period u do not receive the card...you are still marked
as "authorized to work" on ins system...as long as the employer
can verify you can work(if he accepts the approval notice)....I have
seen this happening in our case....so it all depends on
the employer....all this was done with the knowledge of
requirements for I-9

If your EAD card has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you have to apply for replacement document. One may use receipt for lost, stolen, or damaged EAD as actual EAD card for 90 days. Then you have to present replacement document.

Thanks a lot for all ur replies.

I think one can start working. This is an extract from I-9 document Section 2

Section 2 - Employer. For the purpose of completing this
For more detailed information, you may refer to the INS
Handbook for Employers, (Form M-274). You may obtain
the handbook at your local INS office.
Employers must complete Section 2 by examining evidence of
identity and employment eligibility within three (3) business
days of the date employment begins. If employees are
authorized to work, but are unable to present the required
document(s) within three business days, they must present a
receipt for the application of the document(s) within three
business days and the actual document(s) within ninety (90)
days
