can I work with expired EAD?

Do it yourself...
Take the receipt of EAD application, Copy of I485 receipt and a ID with photo (driver\'s licence) to the nearest INS District Office. If you go early you can get the emergency work permit or interim EAD by afternoon.
There are some caveats though, most of the district offices do not entertain interim EAD before 90 days from the RD of EAD. There are also some local INS offices which give interim EAD.
If it is not 90days yet and you have a couple of weeks from expiry you can also apply afresh with the local INS office directly.

Spouse EAD/receipt not received - been 3 months

My wife and I applied for 485 and EAD during the first week of Nov 01. I received my EAD card by the end of Dec 01(surprising!). My wife has received her 485 receipt, but she neither received her EAD receipt nor the EAD card.
Anybody experienced similar situation? Any guesses as to what\'s happening with INS? I called my lawyer\'s office to see if they actually sent in my wife\'s application, and they say they did and giving me all kinds of BS as to why it\'s being delayed. Do I need to talk to an IIO to figure out what\'s going on? because obviously we can\'t use their AVM with no A#.
