Can I travel outside US during i485 on valid h1B ??

I have a valid H1-B till Feb 2003. I need to go to India before Dec 2002. Is it ok for me to travel to India this Dec on my H1-B. I do not have EAD as it is against my company policy.
I have also applied for h1-B renewal to ins.

What will happen if th i485 gets approved while I am out of the country. Will this create any problems ??

you will have no problems

go ahead with your vacation plans.

as long as h1 is valid and you have not used EAD, it is advisable to use H1 to return

carry employment letter, paystubs just to be on the safe side also carry the I485 receipt.

Wait a minute .. when you say 'valid H-1b' - does it mean an approval notice only, or you also have a valid H-1B visa stamped on your passport?
If you do not have a valid H-1B visa stamped on your passport, you will have to get it in a US consulate in your home country.
Plan accordingly (security checks, delay/holiday, interview, etc)!

You should have no problem at all. (Assuming that you are returning before Feb '03).

I recently have been to India and I applied for a new visa too there while my 485 is still pending. I got the visa and came back. No problem anywhere!

I was not asked for any documents nor was I questioned about my GC.
