Can I switch back to H1 from EAD?

I dont think I will get my EAD renewal on time. My EAD expires on 9-Jul-07.
I have applied for renewal on 15-May.

My H1 expired but I could have extended for 6 more months to use six years instead I chose to use EAD.

Can I apply for H1 extension and work on Receipt? Is it possible? what is the process?

If you used your EAD and want to go back to the remauning time in your previous H, you can but you have to wait till the approval of the H (not just the receipt). You have to go abroad and get visa stamp if your current one already expired or even if it is still not expired, then enter back to US then you will get new I-94 at the port of entry indicating that you are H. You CANNOT return back to H from inside the US if you already used your EAD.
