i have been reading these threads for a couple of months now and found them quite informative but with some confusing answers at times. i just joined the forum today and decided to get my questions answered directly.my mother and i were granted asylum by immigration judge a few years ago and i therefore got derivative status since i was under 21 at the time she filed. i got my AS8 green card this year and want to visit my sick father back home. was not sure about renewing my passport and applied for and recieved a rentry permit. can i renew my national passport and use it to travel back home? will i be given a hard time on my return to US at point of entry? will passport renewal be an issue when i become eligible for citizenship interview?

i assume based on your nick name you are probably from Colombia, from which im from too, in case this is correct my experiences might be helpful for you. I got my green card (AS8) through asylum ... i went back to COP 6 times in 3 years and never had any hard time while entering the USA; and i hope i never get it .... i research about this and i could say there is 99% possitivism that AS8 have nothing to worry about because of this. Good luck....

thanks for your reply, although am actually from east africa. wanted to know if you actually use your renwed national passport when going back and forth between COP!

well, when i got my green card 4 years after applying it for, my NP was not expired as of that moment, so i use the same NP and used it to visit COP. couple of years after my NP expired and i renewed it and now im traveling with it.

thank you for your prompt response. i think i will also go ahead and renew my passport. cant believe i paid $380 for a re-entry permit yet there are alot of issues when trying to apply for visas with it as opposed to NP!
