Can i remove family memebers from 485 submission

What do you mean when you say that you included their names in I-140?? I-140 is an employer petition it has only the employee name and not his depenedents. Also if you haven't filed for I-485 yet then it is left to you whom to add along with your application. ( Anyways you will file seperate I-485 applications for each family member ).

He can file I485 separately any time after approval of I140. No problem.

Yep, each dependent will have to file I-485 individually - if they want to do it...
If they do not want to do it....they need not file I-485...
I-140 - it's just for information only.....specifying dependents is of no consequence there...
like for instance, in lot of the cases primary applies I-485 first...
once the dependent paperwork is done, then they file it individually...
as long as the dependents do not file I-485 - you are all set!

from your suggestion, i understand that i can apply for I485 for me now and apply for the dependents beore my 485 approval ( if they wish). in that case, i assume it will not come under family base visa caterogry. only after the primary's 485 approval, the dependents come under the family visa caterory. am i right?

No. If the family relationship existed prior to your I-485 being approved, they will be dependents and fall under your category.
