Can I Leave the country with out 485 Receipt

Can I Leave the country without 485 Receipts.
My Lawyer applied my 485 Application on 08/17 and told me I can not Leave the country until I receive my 485 Receipt.

Is it true?? I want to visit canada on Sept. Long Weekend

Please advise fast.

Leaving the country after applying 485

After filing I485, it is important to have the 485 receipt with you, since you MAY be asked by the immigration officer. This is true even if your H1 is valid. Now if you H1 is not valid or if you have applied for EAD (meaning H1 is no more valid), then make sure that you have your payrole visa in hand. This is what i had been while i filed my 485 and left for India on vaccation.
 
your lawyer is right

If you leave the country before getting a receipt, INS will treat your application as abandoned.
