Can I give it a try?

My current H1B stamp in passport is going to expire on Feb 2005.So it is still 8 months before my old valid visa( which reflects my previous employer) is going to expire. I changed the employer and the new I797 refelects my new H1B petition approval until 2007. If I send my passport to ST Luis then will they revalidate my visa? I know the official UCIS website says NO but did anybody give it a try and had a luck?
