Can I extend J1 to 6th Year?

Hi All,
I am holding a J1 visa and in 5th year. I have the visa valid until Aug 2011. I would like to extend it for one more year (6th Year), so that my wife can continue working.

I am wondering, if it is actually allowed to extend after 5 years. My employer is willing but would like to know how to go about it.....

But, atleast if we know if it is a possibility we can find out other details....

I really appreciate your help in clarifying this.

No you can not for J1 Research scholar.

I thought that J1 can be 'extended' for 5 years. This means that if your first J1 was for 3 years (or 1 yr) you can get it extended for 5 more years (so that total stay could exceed 6 theoretically). I could be wrong on this. Besides, I am not an expert; rely on experts.
