Can I do a fellowship while on H1 and apply for GC at the same time?

Hi everyone
I am an IMG from AUB Lebanon. I am considering applying for H1 for residency but I was told that I cannot do fellowship while on H1 and apply for GC at the same time? Is this true? How does one apply for GC while on H1 in SIMPLE WORDS???

You can continue to go through a fellowship while you are in H1-B status, but I do not think that you can apply for GC at that time. Maybe if you get a permanent position after the fellowship, you can. To apply for a GC you either need an offer for a permanent position and advertise for the job, or you would have to be an outstanding researcher and selfpetition. It is rare that people could prove to be outstanding professors or researchers before they finish fellowship.
