Can I change current company when my H1 is in process?

Hi,

I am currently in India working for a company X. Company Y in USA had filed H1B for me in May 2006 and with the receipt number I have got, I have even booked an appointment with US Consulate, chennai. Appointment date is January 2007. My Question is, meantime if i need/want to change the current company X to some other company Z in India itself, is it advisable?
