Can I apply for Passport renewal after sending application

I have a quick question -

I sent all my forms on the 11th of July for GC application through my wife (a USC). My passport expires 15th October. I was thinking of sending my passport for renewal and it takes about 2 to 4 weeks to get it back. My question is, from now to about 4 weeks (until I get it back) will I be needing the passport anytime for any of the GC things? So, would it be ok to send the passport renewal right now?

You are unlikely to need your passport unless you travel. So you can apply for a new passport. That's what I did. When its time for the interview take both the expired & valid with you.

Make sure you keep a copy/receipt of your application for the new passport.

My advice is to do the following:

1. Make a copy of the cover and back pages of your passport
2. Also copy of the biographical page and all pages showing either visas or entry stamps
3. Make a copy of your application for renewal
4. Send your renewal via courier, so that it can be tracked

You might need it for finger printing if you don't have state driving license or state ID otherwise you should be fine.
