Can I apply for citizenship?

I've recently got the permanent residency(I-551). Previously I'd conditional permanent residency based on a marriage to a citizen.

I've not received the GC card yet and it's just the stamp on my Indian passport. I've been here in US since 1998 and been married (or have conditional GC since 2001). Am I eligible to apply for citizenship?

Do I have to wait until I receive the physical GC?

Thanks for your help!!

I believe the countdown to citizenship starts from the 'resident since' date, which is the day your case was approved. Citizenship through marriage requires a three year wait, vs. five years for other types of LPRs.

I had my passport stamped in May 2001 (conditional permanent residency) after my marriage. Considering that I've already stayed more than 3 years. Do you think I'm eligible?

The reason I'm asking, is, my fried has the similar situation and he also had asked the officer in Newark office when he appeared for the interview for his greencard if he can apply for the citizenship. The officer replies positively and when he applied for citizenship (just having stamp in passport, not physical GC in hand), the application was denied.

Is there anything else I should keep in mind before I apply for citizenship?

Thanks again for your help!

Yes, I've looked at the all the possible documents on USCIS but nothing tells me that I can OR cannot apply for citizenship if I have only I-551 stamp(conditions removed, section 216 granted) on my passport and not have the physical plastic green "card".

Does anybody have any definite answer on this? Or anybody has applied for the citizenship without waiting for the physical GC to come?

Thanks.

from may 2001 add 4 years and 9 months , thats when u can apply for citizenship , also having only a temp card(stamp in the pass or that I-94 kinda thing with your photo on it ) is just fine , when applying make sure u send copies of that also
good luck
