my bf got his FP notice today and it is scheduled on Nov.20, however he will be traveling on that date. Can he go for fingerprint earlier than that without appointment scheduled?

He can try to go earlier but there is no guarantee that he would be entertained and he would be able to get his FP done that same day. Why I say that is because there is a procedure that needs to be followed. When you get your FP notice in the mail, the letter clearly states that if you can't keep your appointment for the day you have been assigned, please return that letter back (probably to your local DO) and request another date that may work for you. If you just walk in and try to get your FP at an earlier date, it will depend on that particular office. It's a 50/50 shot.
