Can GC holder get passport and citizenship in 3rd country?

I am a Jew, GC holder, and formerly an asylee from Ukraine. Can I exercise the right to acquire Israeli citizenship? According to the Israeli law, simplified for the purpose of discussion here, everyone who is Jewish can get Israeli citizenship and passport.

I do not intend to live in Israel, but will proudly hold its passport and travel on it. Not having to reapply for new RTD and not having to have to get visas to many countries is an added advantage.

Can the action of acquiring an Israeli passport be interpreted by the INS as intent to reside in another country and consequently be construed as abandonment of US residence? Again, I do not plan to be living in Israel. I know US citizens sometimes acquire second citizenship so it makes it easier to buy property, etc. Why should this be different for permanent residents? I am curious to get the answer, or a link to where I can get more information.

Thanks in advance.

The issue has nothing to do with your asylum grant pe se. Like all permanent residents you have a legal obligation to make the U.S. your permanent home. Failure to do so may result in loss of permanent residence. Citizens are a completely different story. This is their country and citizenship cannot, except in rarest of circumstances, be involuntarily lost. Permanent residents are still aliens and there are many grounds on which their ability remain here are endangered. So no useful purpose is served by comparing resident aliens to citizens.

I know nothing about citizenship rules in Israel. Based on the limited information from you, I would think this would not present a problem. I do however suggest you to obtain a professional opinion from someone well-versed in the immigration laws of Israel and the U.S.

As an aside, obtaining citizenship of a third country an asylee (before adjustment) will affect your status here.

It seems to me like you're after the Israeli passport which offers broader freedom of travel than your Ukranian passport.
I have some native born American Jewish friends who took the Israeli citizenship bcoz they said it's sacred to them and Israel offers better universal healthcare to it's citizens :)
Sorry, I dont have any expeirence to offer on this matter. But I know this BB has a forum titled " Immigration to other countries: Canada, Australia, etc" so you might wanna post your question there and hope for a reply.
Just curious about one thing since you have more knowledge than I do in this matter: do you have to be present certain number of days in Israel to maintain your Israeli citizenship? Or are there anyother conditions that would make it difficult for a naturalized israeli citizen who spends most of his or her time abroad, to maintain the citizenship?

I don't have Ukrainian passport, remember I was an asylee.

These are good questions. I have no idea. It's probably not worth the hassle just to get the passport.

Yeah, I would just wait a few more years to get the USC and US Passport, and then if he's still interested after that he can look into Israeli citizenship.

On an unrelated topic does the US government prohibit its citizens from serving in foreign armed forces like the Israeli Defense Forces or the French Foreign Legion (I'm not talking about Al Qaeda, PLO, etc.)? Because I think Israel has a mandatory military service for males (may be females too) of certain ages.
