Can E2 principal alien work for multiple companies

Hello all,

Let's say you have an E2 visa for company ABC and you are an investor and working and collecting a salary in this company. Can the E2 visa holder open another company XYZ and be an investor but not receive a salary?

Also, can an E2 investor register another company XYZ and also work and receive a salary for XYZ company?

Can an E2 spouse register a new company and work in that company?

You can start another company (i.e. be a passive investor) but you are not allowed to work for that company unless you apply for a visa that would allow that. Note however that you can only be in one status at any time when in the US so that excludes H1b. The rules would only allow E2 if you want to keep the job with the first E2 sponsoring company. Your spouse however, can do whatever he/she wants if he/she has applied for work authorization document (EAD). Spouses of E2 visa holders can work for any company they want.
