Can AO ask for your phone to check your social media?

I just heard about a guy who was asked in his naturalization interview to present his phone in order to make sure he does not post anything about politics/drugs.

Has anyone ever seen such a thing? Is it even lawful for the officer to to do that?

i never heard of such a thing, what did he do?
i would defiantly refuse
I don't know. I read it on Reddit. Other people reported the same thing in the comment. I think this is in light of the current tensions in the middle east.
I know for sure that they need a warrant to see your messages on WhatsApp.

can you post the link?

Officers have always had the right to ask for anything during N400 interview, this is nothing new. I'm not at all surprised that they can for social media access from cellphones. The N400 is about being transparent - so they know the character of person they are naturalizing. Best bet is to cooperate with them, no hard done.

This seems logical. If you refuse, even on principle, all it does is raise suspicion, and likely consequence is that you get a “decision cannot be made” followed with an RFE. Why delay the process unnecessarily if you truly have nothing to hide?
