I did it recently.Just walked in to INS office. The guard in front directed me to a window after security check. Gave the notice and showed ID to the lady. She asked me to fill up a form which had name, A# ,address etc. waited for aprox. 20 minutes. When my number was called, went in and there was a equipment similar to a photocopying machine. She cleaned my finger with some liquid(may be alcohol based) and then took finger print by pressing my finger against a glass screen. She took finger print of all fingers in both hands. It was very easy.
They will roll the finger from one side to other (full inside part of your finger where the finger prints can be seen). so if there is a cut in one side it would be visible in the FP.
but there might be chances that FBI ask for new prints.. Dont worry about it much. just give it a try, in case they dont accept they will send another request again. Else it is fine..Good Luck
