I am planning a move to toronto as a permanent resident.
I seem to be getting conflicting information about wine & cars.
Wine: it seems the import duty and tax on this is extremely prohibitive - something like 60% of the price sold by the LCBO. Anyone have a different experience?
Cars: This is also confusing. No one on this forum seems to be saying anything about paying duty or tax on personal cars imported for use by Settlers. But everything I read says "Your vehicle will also be subject to provincial or territorial sales tax and safety requirements, so you should check with the vehicle department of the province or territory to which you are moving." and then it says 6% duty (for a non US made car), 8% GST, and like 7% PST for Ontario. This is on the price PAID for the car.
Is this true? The info on this forum makes it sound like personal cars are exempt - is there something I am missing.
Thanks in advance for any help and pointers
