Hi,

Would you please share your info about the Bombay Consulate for New H-1s and the procedure there, standing in line, or few different centers in Bombay or courier service, success ratio, what exactly they are looking for, etc???

lots of Thanks,

H1 stamping in B\'bay is cool

I just returned from a trip to Bombay where I got my visa stamped. Its cool. You need to submit docs to a third-party called Visa Facilitation Services. They take your documents and submit them to the consulate. The docs are then returned by courier.

Check out www.visa-services.com. They list all documents required. Definitely carry all the documents they mention. In addition, its safer to carry paystubs, company badge and other such documents. They also mention the draft fees on the website. I reached the VFS (visa facilitation services) center at 11:00 AM on thursday. They checked all my documents for accuracy. They knew which documents are required by the consulate. Put them all in an envelope and sealed it in front of me. Gave me a receipt. I was out by 11:30. On Saturday morning, all documents were returned by courier with a multiple entry visa stamp on my passport. I have never seen it so simple before.

Just a few precautions:

a) Check the website for the current draft amount. They had just increased it and did not mention the increase on the website. Fortunately, I was carrying some extra cash for a new draft. I told them about the mistake on the website and they said they would accept the difference in cash. Cool!

b) Take a new picture. The website mentions that the picture must not be older than 6 months. They actually verify this fact. A lady in front of me was asked to click a new picture as she had an older one. There is a polaroid instant pic studio at VFS center.

I have never seen it simpler and more organized.

Hope this helps all planning a trip.

What about the NEW first time H-1??

Do you know how are the things for the new first time H-1s??

I had a f1 stamp on my passport and hence was eligible for a dropbox application. I have no idea about "new" first time h1 applications.

Sorry!

visa services

The www.visa-services.com website says that you can apply for H1 in Bombay if you are a resident of Maharashtra etc for last 6 months or if you have been issued H1 by Mumbai consulate.

I have been living in the USA for the last couple of years and I have done my first multiple entry H1 visa from Tijuana,Mexico. Does that mean I cannot apply in Mumbai my hometown?? Seems wrong !!!
I think anyone who has permanent address in passport from Maharashtra can apply to Mumbai consulate irrespective of whether he got his prior H1 from there or not.. correct me if I am wrong !!!

you\'re right.

if you\'re a maharashtra resident, and have held some US visa before, you can in fact use the drop box service of the mumbai consulate. if u read that website carefully, i think that\'s what they say.

hi sramani,

When did you go to Bombat (which month)? Is the VFS the one located in South Bombay near breach candy?

Drop Box facility is cool

I was surprised by how organized the visa facilitation service is. No hassles, no delays, everyone there is very cooperative even the security guard that stands outside.

I am from Pune but went to the Mumbai visa facilitation center personally to submit my passport. I got it within 3 working days by courier service at my home in Pune.

Oh, and btw did anyone happen to notice the staff there??? Some good looking smart Indian girls. Wow it for sure was a pleasent experience.

I applied on the 8th of Dec

how were you eligible for drop-box? are you f1-h1?

would you suggest mumbai directly over mexico/canada?

Mine was a H1-B to H1-B transfer case

I had been working for the new company for the past 8 months with the I797 form. I went to Mumbai and got the new company stamp on the passport.

If you ask me, I dont see the difference between applying for a visa in Mumbai and applying for a visa in Canada/Mexico. Your visa application could get rejected in both places.

Muslim applying in Mumbai?? Well I see why you are concerned. And quite frankly your concern is not entirely baseless. I really have no right to comment on this question. It would however be very sad if your visa application is treated any differently just because you happen to be a muslim. I dont think the world has stooped to that level yet, and I hope it never does. In either case, I dont think you have too many choices. If you want a visa to get to the US, you will have to apply at some US consulate in this world and no matter where you apply, this concern will always exist.
