Hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone could quickly tell me how I should go about getting a birth certificate from India (for green card application). Both my parents are deceased and I have no relatives living in the town of birth. Thanks

Where were you born? I believe that for all births after 1969, births needed to be registered. Check with the local authorities where you were born. If that doesn't apply, then you need to get at least two older relatives (siblings, uncles, aunts, whatever) who can swear of affidavits that you were born on such and such a date and know that as your date of birth. If that doesn't apply then you must swear out an affidavit outlining your difficulties in obtaining a birth certificate and the reason why it is unavailable.

Thanks

Thank you.
I was born in Bombay but before 1969. I am trying to contact the hospital I was born in to see if they could send me a copy. Not sure I will succeed.

I was born in government hospital in small towin in India in 1972 and I never had birth certificate. My matriculation certificate was used all the while as date of birth. will that work for GC processing or do I need something else?

Abhijit_rey,
Just the matriculation cert will not work. Search the forum for "birth certificate" and you will find many answers.

You will need either
1) non-availability certificate and use affadavits (at least 2), matriculation cert. etc as supporting documents.
or
2) BC from the local municpal corporation. If it doesnt have a name on it, you will still need affadavits etc. to go along with it.

There may be other options, but IMO these are the best.
