Birth Certificate Translation Option

Anyone has experience with what to do when the birth certificate has been issued in a language different from English.

I did not have a birth certificate. When I applied for non-availability certificate, I was instead asked to register my birth and then a birth certificate, with late registration, was issued to me. The certificate has been issued in Hindi (One of the Indian languages). I think there is a way to get a translated copy in English from the same office but is taking much longer to get one.

Is there any other option that anyone has tried to get a translated copy in English. Also, please let me know if that has been accepted bu USCIS. Options like getting translated by Indian Consulate in the US or getting translated and notarized in the US or India? Anyone with experience or knowledge about this please let me know.

Thanks

Hi,

For translating a document, you do not need a professional tarnslator. A friend or relative who knows both english and hindi can translate it for you. All he has to do is to include a notarized affidatavit that He knows both the english and Hindi languages, and that it is a true translation of the original.

Alongwith the translated document he should submit a affidavit in the following format:

I __________________, being duly sworn on the _______day of ____________ , 2004, depose and say that:

1. I am __ years old and reside at __________________________;

2. I can read, write and understand hindi and english languages;

3. The attached is a true translation of the birth certificate of ________________, from hindi to english language;

I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the foregoing is true and correct.

Serta is absolutely correct. INS accepts a notarized translation from any individual who claims to know both the languages.

Thanks Rosebh... Thanks for all the useful information that has prepared
me to act accordingly.

Seems like an RFE has been issued for my case...See Mar/Apr Tracker
Would check with the lawyer to see which option they would concur with.

This has helped me get ready for it in advance.
