Birth Certificate from China

Hi friends,
    INS is asking me to submit Birth Certificate. As some of you might know, it takes a lot to get it from China. In my case, the unit I was working at before I came to US is asking for thousands of US$. Does anyone know if there is any other ways to do this?

Before I came to US, I got mine from province notary department. It cost about 200 renminbi. You bring your Hukou and I think that may be enough.

Thanks for the reply sleepy. However, my former unit in China "sent" me to US and because of that they want part of my salary as penalty. It seems to me the notary office needs an approval from that unit. I am wondering if there\'s anyway to do this in US?
