Between I-140 and I-485

Hello,

My I-140 is pending. Once the I-140 is approved, can I hold off for a few months before filing I-485? I need to visit my home city in China for family issues, then come back to the U.S. to file I-485.

Is there a limit on how long I can hold off between the approval of I-140 and filing of I-485?

----- Why you want to wait? If you have I-140 filing receipt then file I-485 immediately also file for EAD, AP earlier you file I-485 earlier the PR of I-485
I need to visit my home city in China for family issues, and then come back to the U.S. to file I-485.
----------- If you have valid H1 or any valid visa stamped in your passport you can come to US with that visa even if you file I-485 now, if you want to make the trip and want to file I-485 latter then it is up to you

----Once I-140 is approved it is valid forever but employer can revoke it any time I-140 belongs to employer and I-485 belongs to you.
