Hi everyone
There are often inquiries about benefits for seniors. I am starting a thread where those who are seniors or those who sponsored aged relatives like parents who are seniors can share information.
To kick off the thread here is my input. Please add information and your experiences for the benefit of others.
When a sponsored relative receives citizenship it absolves the sponsor's financial obligation. Thus even though you might have a senior relative staying with you, they can apply to Social security for benefits. Thus if a senior citizen has less than $1000 of liquid assets (cash etc) they can apply for SSI - Social Security Supplemental Income. This is around $700 for one person and $1100 for a couple. A citizen getting this is then eligible to receive Medicaid where by SS pays the Medicare premium so the citizens gets free Medicaid coverage including drug coverage.
Please share your experiences or knowledge that you may have in this area.
