Being hired after a visa J1

Hi!
I am going to be an intern in a US Company for 12 months with a Visa J1 Intern (March 2010). Actually i have two questions:
- 12months is the maximum amount of time I can obtain with this visa, but can I extend it? If yes for how long can I expect my visa to be extended?
- If I apply for a H1B, do I have to go back to my home country to fulfill the application? or can I take the steps to obtain the new visa while I am in the US on my J1 Visa?

If someone knows another solution for my case, let me know.

I think extension depends on what field you are in. Check the Department of State website.

Yes, you have to go back to your home country for 2yrs before you could apply for an H1B or you can get a waiver.

You can also extend your j1 visa from 12 months to 18 months.
