Becoming A U.S. Citizen via The U.S. Armed Forces

I understand that one can become a U.S. citizen through the U.S. Military. Moreover, the process may take a relatively shorter time. I would like to know if anyone here has used this path for citizenship, and what was the process. In addition, are there stipulations as to how a non-US citizen can serve (i.e. the specific combat/ non-combat roles or areas and branches of the military that non-US citizens can fill). I am specifically interested in the Air Force, Navy and Army. Thanks for the assistance.

I guess the question should have been - how do I join as a non-US person(I live abroad but can travel)?

You can't join if you are a non US citizen living abroad. At the very least you must be a legal permanent resident to join the US military.
