Basic question on I-140 and 485

I have a very basic question.

My employer plans to file I-140 and 485 simultaneously. I need to file this for myself and my family both. The problem is, my family is now in India. The question thus is, is it necessary to have my family physically here before my I-140 and 485 are filed?

----- Let your employer file I-140 and I-485 for YOU. Once your family reaches US you can attach your I-485 filing receipt and file for your depends I-485 when they reach US and depends I-485 will be attached to your pending I-485 file by BCIS officials. They need to be physically IN US to file I-485 for them.
