A letter is preferred

A letter from the bank is preferred. The reason for this is that it is possible to borrow money, put into an account and then get a statement.

Getting a letter provides the current balance, average balance, date of account opening etc, which is the detail that USCIS looks for.

There is a standard format that most banks use for this. They will issue it without any problem, but might charge a fee of 10-15 dollars for it.
