Bank Account in Canada?

Does anyone have an experience of opening a bank account in Canada? If so, could you share your experience?

1. Did you open it while you are there? or did you do it from the US?
2. Is RTD accepted as one of the required photo IDs?
3. Any hassle?
4. Any bank you would recommend?

Thanks,

cider_or,
You could, actually. Many Canadian banks allow foreigners to open an account. The question is: what do they think of RTD?

Many Americans open Canadian bank account by presenting US passport and they have no SIN. And they are not Canadian residents. So they present US passport and US driver's license.

For us, does RTD together with DL qualify? That's what I'd like to know.

I don't think SIN number is a requeirment unless the rules have changed recently. Bank of Montreal requeirs two forms of ID. RTD, I am not sure, but passport, Candian Provincal DL/ID or US State DL/ID and a Visa Card with photo worked with me a couple of years ago and should still be ok. You will be asked if you need a residental or non-residental one upon openning your bank account. if you choose resident account, you will be needing offerring a local address.

hope this helps a bit.
