Updated 09/27/00: VSC Grim Report of Backlogs

AILA reports that VSC anticipates that the backlog will continuously grow for the first part of FY 2001 for the two reasons: The ongoing file audits cause backlogs as applications/petitions keep coming in. More importantly, Congress has yet to approve the INS budget and the Service Centers will have to cease overtime work as there will be no overtime fund. Reportedly, Service Centers have been heavily relying on overtime funding.
It is also surprising that the Service Centers have been issusing a high rate of RFEs. VSC record reflects that in FY 2000, the rate of RFE for I-140 has been 26.62% and that for I-129 in all categories has been 19.53%. Reportedly, VSC is currently handling the RFE issued in mid-July by "clerical staff," implying that the final adjudication will take some time.

First part of FY 2001- it starts in Ocotber, right?
That means they will be processing Aug/Sep, 99 cases for a long time.
Any comments?

Not sure how their financial calander works - but the visas quota sure does begin October 1st. If it is indeed 10/01, then they should get through those August/September \'00 apps rather quickly. However, looking at filing numbers at NSC (someone at isn.org did a decent analysis), the data does confirm that the Aug/Sept applications were substantial, while October through January, they fell drastically. SO, yes, once they get through Aug/September, they\'ll go through the next few months rather quickly.

Fingers crossed!

It seems the operation cost of the INS is pretty
high. Why don\'t them charge AOS applicants more
(e.g. $2,850 instead of $285) as long as they can
process faster.
