Baby passport

Hi,

We got our greencards a while back, and now we are expecting a baby. Our plan is to travel back home (Venezuela) maybe 2 or 3 weeks after the baby is born so the whole family meet the new baby.

The questions are mostly on the practical side:
1.- How soon can we get the baby as passport ?
2.- what is needed ?
3.- Does anybody has experience with a trip like this ?
4.- Any recommendations for the trip and paperwork before the trip ?

That will be very difficult to do. First, you need a birth certificate which may take a couple of weeks to get. Then, you need to apply for the passport and even the expedite process is about 4 weeks.

You should plan to travel about 2 months after the baby is born.

Another issue is when the baby will be physically ready for the rigors of airline travel (get advice from the doctor about the infant's condition and readiness).

Thanks for the answers, we actually have a few friends that have done this but from Europe and not the US, and of course we'll check with the Dr before actually booking the tickets .

Once the baby is born, you will have to get a birth certificate from the local office responsible for registering births, then you will get a social security card in the mail, take both of them along with baby photos,passport application and fees to a nearby post office and apply for expidited service. It will still take a few weeks to get the passport.

I would estimate that it would take atleast 6 weeks from the point that the baby is born to get a passport.

Yes. But our baby was a few months old, not a few days old. Ask the airlines people for the basinet seat when you book your tickets.

4.- Any recommendations for the trip and paperwork before the trip ?

Get all the right shots before travelling. Also carry the medical records with you to Venezuela in case you need those there.

yes, i would suggest planning trip after at least 3-6 months. Also the baby needs to be photographed, and make sure they do not use harsh lights. You need to lie the baby down in the studio, we took newspapers and sheets to be put down for that.

We found it convenient to photograph our kid at home using a digital camera and in natural light.
We turned off the flash.
Laid the baby on a plain white sheet for background.
Took a few snaps. Selected the one we liked.
Took it to a Meijer and they printed it to passport size dimension.
Worked out good.

(And later we found the difference in cost (0.37c each compared to $7.99 for two copies if we had taken the baby to the studio. Made us feel better for taking care of it without inconveniencing the baby; also saving some $$ too.)
