B2 Visa extension and I-94

Hi,
I have applied for B2 visa extension 6 weeks before my I-94 expiration date. I have received I-797 C ( receipt of application) and after which I have submitted supporting documentation to justify visa extension. My application status is showing "request for evidence" and I have received a letter today requesting additional documentation. This process is taking a long time and my I-94 is set to expire on 12 Dec. If my extension application is denied later , what will my legal status be after 12 Dec till I receive notification from USCIS ?
If I decide to go back while my extension application is being processed what is the procedure to cancel extension application ?

I read on the USCIS website that the visa "may" also become void in this case and that one would have to reapply. Does this always happen even if we leave US within 10 days or so after getting a denial of extension? Has anyone had experience where the extension was denied, returned back to home country, and at some point in the future visited US with the same visa without having to reapply for visa? How would we even know whether the current visa has been voided or is still valid?

Basically provision 222(g) may be enforced by the officer at the POE the next time an over-stayer tries to enter the US. The decision to enforce 222(g) is at the discretion of the officer. It is not at al mandatory. It is very much possible that the POE officer may not care at all with regards to the 10 day over-stay during the previous trip. Going by numbers, 222(g) is rarely enforced.
