hi, i was recently approved for my h1b visa.. does this automatically make my husband (my dependent) approved for his h4 visa??

If you mean that based on your H1 your husband can now go to a consulate to get H4 stamped yes he is.

But if he is with you in USA on some other status he will need to leave and visit a consulate or apply for COS

we are both in the US right now. the thing is we have to go back to our country because it was a consular processing. we haven't received a notice of approval yet for his case. does it come separately from my notice of approval?

you dont need to apply for a preapproval for H4

you will need to take a joint appointment at the consulate carry all the paperwork for H1 and proof of relationship (marriage certificate, photos etc) and based on that he will be given the H4 stamp.
