B2: how long does interview take ? Passport back the same day ?

Hello,

I have a B2 visa interview next week in chennai for my mom. I am not from chennai and so will be flying to chennai the day before the interview with my mom. The interview is at 8:45 AM. I have 2 questions

1. How long will the interview procedures inside the consulate take ? When can we book a flight back to my hometown. Would 4PM the same day be fine ?

2. Can we expect to get the passport back the same day over the counter at VFS ? I mean does it make sense for us to stay back till evening to collect the passport ; or is it not guaranteed that the passport will be sent to VFS the same day ?

1. Interview process always varies with time. When I went - the officer stated that he ran overboard with the previous case... and we were late and he stated that he almost denied us. Then our interview only took about 5-8 minutes, but we were seperated. So it really does depend.

2. Sometimes you can get it same day, we were denied request for same day or immediate travel from the officer. he stated that even if he wanted "they" took his stamp away and he wasn't able to stamp my wifes passport with a travel visa. But, it doesn't hurt to always ask. Maybe you'll get it - i've heard of numerous people who received the stamp to travel aftetr they were approved at the time of the interview and green card came later.... I was told there had to be "dire" consequences if my wife didn't show up i.e. - life or death situation even though her brother was very sick with Tourrettes syndrome....
 
Speaking to a former US consul posted in Islamabad, the average interview itself takes 45-120 seconds. However an average applicant usually spends 2-4 hours at the consulate.
