Hi Guys,

A friend of mine told me that is in his intention to change his visa from F1 to B1 in order to stay in the USA without going to school and be able to work. (right now he pays around $300 a month in school)

now what he told me is that the B1 visa requires you to go back to your original country, $100 and show a bank account with $5000, so that you can receive a 6 months visa. He also told me that he knows somebody who did this for 3 years (so 6 visas issued, or extensions I don't know)

is that true? what are the implication? can you explain a little what is he getting into?

Thank you

WRONG!!!

B1 is for working for company in home country on assignment in the US under very specific limitations.

Read USCIS website about possible guest worker options.

Do NOT take any advice from this individual as you are likely to be very sorry in the future.

can you be more specific? from what I read the B1 is also the same visa you get with the visa waiver program, or not?

You may visit as a tourist or for business. A business visitor is working for a foreign company meeting with US based client or entity. You may not be a US based worker in the normal employment mode on that visa. You would need H1B if you have appropriate educational background. If you are an undergraduate student, you do not qualify. If you are a graduate student, find a legitimate employer willing to file for you.

No.
Does his country of citizenship allow visitors to work without appropriate work permits?

I don't think so... so I should tell him that he's just gonna end up in a ditch if he does that :D... I knew that the B-1 was not a working visa... I'll tell him again

thank you!
