I am a doctor working in a big hospital with a very good salary.

I already had B1/B2 visa before and travelled to the US in 2008. I have also been to several countries over the past 10 years, Turkey, Holland, UK, Syria and Jordan.

I had an appointment this morning at the US consulate for an application for B1/B2 visa. I am married and has a son here home, and I applied only for myself. I was expecting to get the visa today, but surprisingly, my application is refused.

A doctor with good salary, with a clean history of travelling to many countries as a tourist, with one short visit to the US only few months back, and with strong ties with home (wife and son). REALLY BIG SURPRISE..

Any advices?

What citizenship do you hold and which consulate you applied at?
Why are you so surprised? An applicant's salary and profession are variables in the decision process but they are not the only variables considered.

I am egyptian and I applied in Cairo.

I beleive that my travelling history is very clean. I have even travelled to the US few months back, stayed 10 days. Never overstayed in any of my travels. I repeat I have good reasons to come back to my home country and those are: My job, my salary, my wife, my son.

I applied for B1/B2 in 2007 and got the visa immediately. I beleive my situation now is much better than in 2007 as I am now in a good job, with a salary ten times as my salary in 2007, also I proved that I am a trustworthy traveller.

So what might the reasons for the refusal be?

Consuls do not need a reason to deny an applicant a B-2 visa. Just a mere suspicion that the applicant will not leave the US in a timely fashion is enough to refused the visa under 214(b). Now what are the reasons to suspect an applicant? Well no one can speculate those. Remember, the consul is an individual who uses his/her own experience/judgement to determine this, whether correctly or incorrectly.

Unfortunately it seems that the VO who processed my application was not experienced at all.

Since the year 2000 I travelled 15 times as a tourist and I never overstayed. I also have very strong reasons to come back.

This experience I had at the US consulate was really disappointing, and it showed how some US officials think they are always doing the right thing, especially when they deal with citizens from the third world.

I applied again today and it was really nice.. The VO was very nice and competent, unlike the first one. He said that the visa is approved but I should undergo administrative review that will last for at least two weeks.

What did he mean by administrative review? And why would they request that although I got my previous visa only 2 years ago without this administrative part?

Sorry for posting too late..

My administrative processing was finalized by June 28th and my visa was issued few days later and then sent back to me.. Five years multi- B1/B2..
