B1/B2 to J1 urgent please

Hi,
I want to take a short term (10 months) research position in an university in US from october 2nd 2006 and its partially funded and they have agreed to provide me a letter of support to apply for J1 VISA.
I am an Indian Citizen currently in UK on a temporary visa and I have a B1/B2 10 year multiple entry US visa.I am in a dilemma whether to apply for a J1 from UK or is it possible and feasible to come to USA on a visitors and then convert my B1/B2 to a J1 visa.Please advice ,would really appreciate any input.

You need to talk to your university's international/immigration advisor. Some universities do not deal with status change and some do. In any case, when arriving to the US you would have to indicate your intention to change status on the border. Changing status takes time, you many not be eligible to work while waiting.
