Atlanta Walk-In EAD experience....

Hi Folks,

Yesterday I got my First EAD from Atlanta district office. Just wanted to share this with you.

The documents you need are:

1) Copy of Receipt of I-485

2) Copy of Receipt of I-765

3) Fill out the form I-765. To avoid confusion, we had downloaded the form and filled it before leaving home. Saved us time and confusion over there.

4) Original Passport (not a photocopy). There was this guy who had a photocopy. He kept pleading that they accept it instead of original but the officer was very firm and told him to come back with original.

5) People who were there for renewal were asked for original work permit.

There’s no need for any picture, in fact they take one on Polaroid camera directly connected to computer. Bringing your own pictures will be of no use.

We reached the office at 4.40 AM. We were lost for some time, so those who are not local add that time too. We parked across the INS building. There is an Asian guy to whom you pay. There were already 2 guys who had come at 4. Another couple had parked next to us. We were 5th & 6th in queue. All 4 people before us were there for EADs. By 5 AM the line had increased and there were at least 15 people. Remember they take only 10 walk-ins per day, so be sure to go early. Be prepared that people standing by themselves could have a spouse coming later.

We waited for 3 hrs outside and they took us in at 7.30. They did not give us any token. Once inside, things moved fast. We were surprised to be out in 1 1/2 hrs with EAD Card in hand that was valid for 1 year. This was not an interim Card with 3 month validity.

Hope this helps :)

Correction

We were out in 2 1/2 hrs and not 1 1/2 hrs. We went in at 7.30 am and were out by 10 am.

Thank you for the information....

You said you had a walkin EAD.... You did not send the EAD applicationt to regional office, correct?

Also do you know if they would entertain EAD's from other state office?

I am asking questions because, My local INS office changed process on me, they were doing walk-in EAD's and suddenly stopped. Now I am waiting for VSC to approve my case and give my EAD.

I am out of work because of the situation ( no valid EAD ). I do not mind going to the office you mentioned and may be try my luck their.

Please give more details.... Thank you very much for sharing the information.

Hello Ravi,

Well we had filled for our 485, 765 at TSC. Notice date was 10/21/02 since 90 days had passed we went to local district (ie in our case Atlanta) to get EAD.

I am not sure if they can issue EAD for case that has been filed in other service center.I am presuming your case has been filled in VSC.

The best thing that you can do is call up your service center and find out if it can be done.

Well it was a good thought.... That I could get a EAD done...

I guess I've to wait untill things turn around/ 90 days

Thank you very much for your response.

good luck
Ravi

ASWARAI,
Congratulations!!
we can relish about this for a year by keeping ourselves busy by working. I am also in the same boat as you.

I am also a first time EAD person. I am in Virginia. But my service center is TSC with ND:11/18/02. I am planning to attend the Norfolk office on 20th Feb.

What is the next step for you. Apply for ssn. Keep updating the details. My wife has to apply for SSN after she gets the IEAD.
How long does it take to get the ssn.
